That says much more about the reviewers than the writing!

And your novel Amorous Woman truly deserves to be mentioned among the other works of great literary erotica. I read it because I saw such glowing reviews on Erotica Revealed that I had to see what had others so excited. It's such a pleasure to read quality work, no matter what genre. I totally agree that Best American Short Stories is subject to the same subjectivity as anyone's list of best sex scenes, but because most of us are expecting to be turned on by the sex scenes, that adds an extra element of pure personal affinity. Add to that the fact that you can easily shame and ridicule sex and most "respectable" people will be too afraid to come to the defense of that kind of free speech, well, sexually explicit writing is the easiest kid in the literary playground to bully. The pointers you give here are the best way to let us all make up our own minds. I wish readers would adopt that approach with all writing! (And, needless to say, it's an honor to be included in the list with my mentors and literary inspirations!)Donnahttps://www.blogger.com/profile/13615190390845433428noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-14040026.post-30673070422049834192012-11-01T05:38:10.740-07:002012-11-01T05:38:10.740-07:00I've recently entered the world of erotica, an...I've recently entered the world of erotica, and as a male am very interested in your discussion. It seems the story of my life that I'd try and become successful in a field where the odds are stacked against me! I used a scene in my paranormal book, Angel, about a dark angel negotiating a human suicide so he can claim her soul, and she orders absinthe, since she thinks she'll now have to get used to "dark" things. I got a bottle and my husband and I tried it, and, although it isn't a favorite, I can see the appeal. You are so right, the ritual is everything, like in Dracula. That's how I wrote my scene, too. It was like a "handshake with the devil" kind of scene, and so perfect for it. A good story is a good story.

There was a a time when female authors were encouraged to use male pseudonyms just to get published. Harper Lee dropped her first name of Nellie. Mary Ann Evans became George Eliot. The Bronte sisters first published under the names Acton and Currer Bell.

As the romance genre became popular, we saw the reverse. Male authors used female pseudonyms in order to get published. If you've read a V.C. Andrews' book published since the early 90's, then it was probably written by the man who took over her name after she passed away in 1986.

Honestly, the only thing I worry about when it comes to the gender of an author is that I know what pronoun he/she prefers the readers to use when referring to him/her.Anonymousnoreply@blogger.com
